Something is working
As you are raising your kids sometimes you forget to stop along the way and make sure they’re actually getting it. I do this intentionally sometimes. Like, when I tell them ‘NO’ just to make sure they’ll be ok with it:)
It’s good to check in on them occasionally and test the process. It’s good to help them understand the universe doesn’t revolve around them. One could easily forget to remind their kids of this and before they know it, they’ve got a mess of a kid on their hands. My 3 crazies have their fair share of battles with selfishness, complaining and defiance…but something refreshing happened this morning.
Adia’s best friend stopped by with a shovel and asked if my kids wanted to walk around shoveling driveways. They all got dressed up like the Michelin Man and headed out. I continued sitting on the couch setting a few things up for the icampus online. 2 hours later they came in and told me they raised some money. I know how this usually goes down: the next time we’re at the mall they want to spend an hour at the 50 cent candy machines.
Not today. Kasen, our middle crazy, informed me they got paid and wanted to put the money in our ‘Honduran’ replica house at the PBurg campus. Wow. Here I had secretly been wondering if they were taking money out of that thing all those days they go to work with me and roam the lobbies:)
I’ve been to honduras multiple times.
They haven’t.
I’ve never asked them to help kids in third world countries. I guess I figured they would get it when they get it. I guess I really didn’t care if they got it yet or not. 9, 7, 5…they’re still young. If I’m honest with myself I could probably say I didn’t value it enough to instill it in them.
It doesn’t matter. Because they ‘get it’. Not because their dad is always living for a cause…they ‘get it’ because we’re always keeping Jesus at the heart of our family. In simple ways. Nothing too overly Christian here. Praying, thanking Jesus for blessing our family and friends. Reading them Bible stories. Obviously they’re around CedarCreek a lot.
I realize just by keeping Jesus in their focus…He’s been teaching them and I didn’t even stop to see if it was working.
So He decided to show me it was working this morning. I love when He does that.
